You can't predict how much snow a Wichita winter will bring but you can count on the frigid air turning your skin to shit.

At least I can.

In lieu of expensive masks and creams, I turned to my kitchen in search of the best winter-resistant recipes that might keep me from obsessively applying lotion every five minutes.

I scoured the Internet for recipes and a lot of them suck. I felt like I was six years old playing mad scientist.

This time, instead of leaving my potions to rot underneath my bed I left the remnants in the sink. It was my boyfriend's turn to do the dishes.

Winner #1 - Looks Like But Won't Make You Vomit Facemask
Equal parts finely ground oats, aloe vera gel, brown sugar, essential oil (I used jasmine).

Mix everything in a blender. Pat mixture onto face. Watch it slide down on your shirt and then the floor. Let it dry for five minutes and apply more. Rinse after about 15. If you throw a bunch on the floor or in a toilet at work, you'll have yourself the afternoon off.

Winner #2 - Tasty Hair Hydrator
Half an avocado, 2 tablespoons plain yogurt.

Mix in a blender. Apply to hair. Let set for 15 minutes. If you rinse in an old College Hill shower that doesn't drain well, it will look like you're standing in urine. But, it doesn't stink or even taste bad. Alright. It's my new favorite breakfast.

Winner #3 - I Want Some of Your Brown Sugar Scrub
1 cup brown sugar, 3 tablespoons olive oil.

Mix and heat in microwave for about a minute. Apply wherever. If you don't try anything else, try this scrub. It'll even make the most weathered hands and feet smooth.

Smell natural and local
If you're into natural products and want to smell good too, pick up some Electric Pussy linen spray. A 'between the sheets treat,' Electric Pussy is made from witch hazel and essential oils into scents like tangy and spicy 'Bare & Legal,' and the flowery, ultra-feminine 'Happy Ending'. Plus, creator Caitlin Harrah says you can spray the scents anywhere, including on yourself. Get your delicious sprays at Harmonious Posh or Rewound Sounds for $9 bucks.
